What Is the Shahada?

The Shahada is the declaration of faith in Islam. It means that a person believes there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله

Meaning: There is no god except Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

The original page was created for Deaf, mute and hearing-impaired brothers and sisters who wanted to know how to convert to Islam using ASL. The goal remains the same: to make the declaration of faith easier to understand and access.

Islam is not limited by language, sound, nationality or background. A person enters Islam through sincere belief and acceptance of the Shahada. For someone who communicates through ASL, the meaning and intention are what matter.

How to Approach the Shahada in ASL

Understand the meaning. Know that the Shahada is a declaration of worshipping Allah alone and accepting Muhammad, Peace and Blessings upon him, as the Messenger of Allah.
Believe it sincerely. The Shahada should come from the heart, with belief and acceptance.
Declare it in the way you are able. This may be spoken, signed in ASL, written, or communicated clearly according to your ability.
Begin learning step by step. After the Shahada, focus on prayer, basic beliefs, Quran, good character and finding supportive Muslims.
A person should not delay becoming Muslim if they sincerely believe. Learning Islam continues gradually after entering Islam.
