What Is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam and an act of worship. It purifies wealth and helps those in need. Zakat may also be written as Zakah or Zakaat.

For common cash-based assets, the basic Zakat rate is 2.5% when a Muslim owns wealth above the Nisab threshold for a lunar year. Other categories, such as agricultural produce, livestock and some business matters, may have different rulings.

What Is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess before Zakat becomes due. It is commonly calculated using the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver.

Because gold and silver prices change, this page does not hard-code a fixed Nisab amount. Check the current price, enter the threshold into the calculator, then calculate your Zakat based on your current assets.

“Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase.”

Quran 9:103.

Zakat Calculator FAQ

How much Zakat do I pay?

For standard zakatable cash and similar assets, the common rate is 2.5% if the wealth is above Nisab and has been held for a lunar year.

Should I use gold or silver for Nisab?

Scholars and organisations may differ on whether to use the gold or silver Nisab in a given context. Silver usually produces a lower threshold and may benefit more poor people. Ask a trusted scholar or Islamic organisation if unsure.

Do I pay Zakat on my home and personal car?

Personal-use items such as your home, furniture, personal car, food and clothing are generally not included unless they are held for trade or business purposes.

What if I missed Zakat in previous years?

Make an honest attempt to calculate what you owe for previous years and pay it as soon as possible. If the matter is complex, seek qualified advice.
